Can I substitute graham cracker crust for pie crust?

You sure can! The baking time and temperature will most likely be different than if you used a traditional pie crust like my Flaky Butter Pie Crust, but it's an easy option that works with lots of fillings. You can even make Pumpkin Pie in Graham Cracker Crust or lemon bars with a graham cracker crust!

Let's dive in to how you can make this caramel apple pie with graham cracker crust!

    Ingredients

You can check the recipe card below for full ingredient measurements, but here are the simple ingredients you'll need for the best apple pie with graham cracker crust:

fruit pies with graham cracker crust ingredients
    • apples - Of course, you can't make apple pie without apples! Opt for your favorite variety - I used Granny Smith and Gala for a good mix of sweet and tart apples.
    • lemon juice - A splash of lemon juice keeps the apples fresh and adds a zesty kick.
    • vanilla extract - for the best flavor, I like to use pure vanilla extract. Or you can make your own!
    • salted butter - I use salted butter in most of my baking. If you only have unsalted butter, feel free to add an additional pinch of salt.
    • granulated sugar and brown sugar - the perfect blend of sweet and rich flavors. Feel free to use light or dark brown sugar.
    • apple pie spice - you can also use pumpkin pie spice, or use my Pumpkin Spice Blend recipe to make your own! And if you love the spices in this recipe, you'll definitely want to check out my Chai Spice Bundt Cake!
    • salt - to bring out the flavors in our pie filling!
    • cornstarch - thickens our filling and prevents any leaking in the crust!
    • store-bought graham cracker crust - a pre-made graham cracker pie shell is the secret to making this pie so easy! If you prefer, you can prepare a homemade graham cracker crust from graham cracker crumbs using the instructions in my Lemon Icebox Pie recipe.

And then we'll make a quick cinnamon streusel topping to add a buttery cinnamon crunch to this pie!

    • flour -  Measure your all purpose flour by weight with a kitchen scale to make sure you don't accidentally add too much.
    • brown sugar - adds a caramely sweetness to our crumb topping!
    • ground cinnamon - adds the perfect amount of spice! And if you love warm spices, check out the flavors in my Cinnamon Rolls Peach Cobbler!
    • salted butter - this butter should be softened to room temperature. Similar to the above, add in an additional ¼ teaspoon of salt if you're using unsalted butter.
    • store-bought caramel sauce - the perfect way to top it all off, along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

    Equipment

If you're making your apple pie in a graham cracker crust that was store-bought, it includes the pie pan. But if you're making your own, you'll need a 9-inch pie dish. You'll also want a saucepan to mix up your pie filling, and I like to use a kitchen scale for measuring flour.

How long to cook apple pie with graham cracker crust

Making this easy apple pie with graham cracker crust is so simple! Check the recipe card below for detailed instructions but here are the basic steps:

apple pie with graham cracker crust - step 1

Heat peeled and sliced apples over medium heat, then stir in remaining filling ingredients until reduced.

apple pie with graham cracker crust - step 2

Combine crumble ingredients in a large bowl and mix crumb mixture together with your hands until it resembles coarse crumbs.

apple pie with graham cracker crust - step 3

Spoon apple mixture into graham cracker crust.

apple pie with graham cracker crust - step 4

Sprinkle crumble topping on top, and bake 30-35 minutes or until your crumb topping is golden brown!

Hint: Like with my Cherry Crumb Pie or my Cherry Coffee Cake, you won't want to skip the chilling time for the crumb topping! It really helps achieve that buttery crumble texture. Have a Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini while you wait!

    Storage

Another reason I love making apple pie in a graham cracker crust is that storebought crusts usually come with an easy storage option! You can just flip over the plastic top that comes with the packaging and secure it to the finished pie with the edges of the foil pan!

Otherwise, you can use an airtight container. It should stay fresh in the fridge for up to 4 days.

    Top Tip

Let your pie cool completely before cutting to ensure even slices. If you like your pie served warm à la mode, heat individual slices separately.

    Frequently Asked Questions

No need! The graham cracker crust gets nicely crisped and toasty during the regular bake, a pre-bake won't be necessary to make this apple pie in a graham cracker crust!

Can you bake a pie in a premade graham cracker crust?

Yes!! And this caramel apple pie is just the beginning! You can make lots of fruit pies with graham cracker crust using the same method!

canned apple pie with graham cracker crust

What filling can you put in graham cracker crust?

The world is your oyster! If you want options other than this homemade apple pie filling, blueberry pie filling and cherry pie filling would be delicious, sort of like my Cherry Crumb Pie or my Blueberry Cream Cheese Coffee Cake! And of course, you can also add a cheesecake filling like my No Bake Cheesecake!

Can I make a canned apple pie with graham cracker crust?

Yes! You can substitute 1-2 cans of your favorite canned apple pie filling for the homemade apple filling we're making in this recipe.

    Instructions

    • Heat apples and salt over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until apples release some moisture and begin to soften.
7-8 medium apples, ½ teaspoon salt
    • Add lemon, butter, sugars, apple pie spice, and cornstarch and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and continue to cook, stirring, until mixture is thickened and apples are tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat to cool slightly, then stir in vanilla.

Great recipe. Next time a little less topping. The apples/spices/crust were delicious. Used Wolf River and honey crisp apples.
