    What are Christmas Oreos?

Winter Oreos, commonly known as holiday Oreos, are a limited-edition variety of Oreos with a red creme filling and festive winter decorations! They're usually available in grocery stores in November and December here in the U.S. and they're always a wonderful sweet treat! Perfect for this chocolate-covered holiday Oreos recipe!

You can also use Christmas Oreos in my Oreo Pound Cake!

    What flavor are Christmas Oreos?

Red Christmas Oreos actually have the same flavor as the classic cookie, but they're somehow so much better! Then when you dip Christmas Oreo cookies in melted chocolate, they're the perfect treat for the holiday season!

    Are Christmas Oreos vegan?

Winter Oreos are made without animal products, but according to the FAQ on the UK OREO website, there is a risk of cross-contamination with milk, so they're not technically suitable for vegans. You can see the full nutrition information in the recipe card below.

    Ingredients

For this no-bake recipe you'll only need a few ingredients, and it's really up to your preference! I wanted to make both white Christmas Oreos and milk chocolate dipped Oreos, so I got both types of melting wafers. You can decide how you want to decorate your Winter Oreos and pick those ingredients accordingly!

    • Oreos - pretty important to this Oreo Christmas cookies recipe! I definitely prefer the Christmas Oreos with red filling, but you can use classic Oreos, or substitute any other type of chocolate sandwich cookie! It might also be a great variation to use the new limited edition Snickerdoodle Oreos!
    • white and milk chocolate candy melts - I used Ghirardelli melting wafers in white and milk chocolate because I love the rich chocolatey flavor, but Wilton Candy Melts, or almond bark candy coating would work too. You could even use melted white chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips, but you might need to add a bit more vegetable oil to achieve the best dipping texture. And if you're a chocolate lover, check out my Hot Chocolate Mug Cake!
    • vegetable oil or coconut oil - this helps to thin out the melted candy so that it dips more easily and neatly.
    • festive sprinkles - I'd recommend a 6-cell sprinkles container, or as many red and green sprinkles as you like! And if you love sprinkles, check out my Birthday Rice Krispie Treats!
    • candy eyes, M&Ms, and mini pretzels - for the Rudolph decoration!
    • treat bags and ribbons - if giving as holiday gifts!
    • food coloring - optional, to add a different color to the white chocolate Oreos!

    Equipment

All you'll really need for this holiday Oreos recipe is a microwave and a microwave-safe bowl! And either parchment paper or a cooling rack to let the chocolate set. You could also use a double boiler if you prefer.

    Tips and F.A.Q.

How do I melt my chocolate smoothly?

Check on it in the microwave every 15-20 seconds and stop cooking when it's mostly melted, stirring it the rest of the way. This will help keep that smooth, thin texture we want.

  • Scrape the bottom of your cookies
  • I learned to let all the extra chocolate drip off, and then scrape the bottom of the cookies on the edge of the bowl before setting them on a cooling rack or parchment to dry. That way, the excess chocolate won't pool around the cookies as they set.
  • Decorate them right away
  • Don't wait too long to add your decorations onto your Christmas dipped Oreos or they won't stick as well!
  • How do I store these holiday Oreos?

Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, to keep them fresh for your holiday parties!

What are some other simple Christmas cookie recipes for my cookie exchanges?

Not to worry! I've got plenty of festive treat recipes for your cookie swap! In fact, these Christmas Oreos are part of my list of my 45 favorite Christmas cookies for cookie exchange parties! Any of them would be a great addition to your dessert table!

    Instructions

    • Place melting wafers in two bowls; white in one, and milk chocolate in the other. Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil to each bowl.
10 oz milk chocolate melting wafers, 10 oz white melting wafers, 2 teaspoon vegetable oil
    • Heat each bowl in microwave for 30-second intervals, stirring regularly until melted and smooth.
    • Place one cookie in the melted candy and flip with a fork to coat evenly.
      24 Oreo cookies
    • Lift cookie with the fork to allow candy to drip off, and scrape on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess.
    • Gently place on parchment paper (or on a cooling rack placed above parchment paper) and top with sprinkles and/or decorations. Allow to set.
      sprinkles
    • For Rudolph cookies, add candy eyes and a red M&M (with the "m" facing down) to the milk chocolate-dipped cookies. Carefully break a pretzel in half to resemble antlers and tuck the pieces into the cream filling on the sides of each cookie.
candy eyes, mini pretzels, red M&Ms
    • For marble effect, add chocolate melted candy to a bowl with a bit of white melted candy (or the reverse; mostly white candy with a bit of chocolate). Swirl just a bit with a toothpick or knife, and then dip cookie as above. Flip cookie until desired marble effect is reached.
    • Allow to set fully at room temperature. To set more quickly, place in the refrigerator to chill.

Okay, I'm so excited. I wasn't sure I'd find the right Oreos but I did. I'm making this recipe with my nieces this weekend and I can't wait. And truthfully, I think I'm more excited than them! 🙂
