What kind of cookies does Cookie Monster eat?

One fun piece of trivia is that on Sesame Street, Cookie Monster's cookies aren't real chocolate chip cookies -- they are actually rice cakes with brown spots painted on them! But I can say for certain that if he ate real cookies, these blue monster cookies would be his first choice (and maybe my Chocolate Orange Shortbread Cookies would be his second)!

They're big cookies, and filled with so much goodness -- the most delicious bakery style cookies recipe you've ever had! You've got to try this cookie monster cookie recipe! And if you love chocolate, try my Mini Egg Brownies, my Dairy Free Brownies, or my Matcha Brownies!

What are Cookie Monster cookies made of?

The real Cookie Monster's cookies are made of rice crackers that are decorated to look like cookies. But if he could, Cookie Monster would rather eat these!

    Cookie Monster Cookie Ingredients

You'll see the full measurements below in the recipe card, but here's what you'll need to pick up for these delicious cookies:

    • unsalted butter - melt your butter, then let it cool for a bit before starting your batter.
    • light brown sugar and granulated white sugar - this combination of
    • egg - make sure your egg is room temperature so that it doesn't harden your butter when you add it in!
    • pure vanilla extract - be sure to use a higher quality pure vanilla extract. Or better yet, check out my post on how to make vanilla extract at home with just 2 ingredients!
    • all-purpose flour - be sure to use a kitchen scale to measure your dry ingredients to achieve the right texture for these famous cookie monster cookies!
    • cornstarch - a little corn starch added to our flour mixture helps create soft cookies!
    • baking soda - gives a little lift to these blue cookies!
    • salt - I like to add a good amount of salt to offset the sweetness of these cookies.
    • blue food coloring - add as much as you need to achieve the perfect blue dough! I like to use gel food coloring, but either type works!
    • semisweet chocolate chips and white chocolate chips - this combination is an explosion of sweet and chocolatey goodness! And if you love chocolate chips, try my Chocolate Chip and Marshmallow Cookies!
    • chopped Oreo cookies - I love Oreos in everything, especially in this cookie monster chocolate chip cookies recipe! And if you like Oreos, try my Oreo Pound Cake!
    • mini Chips Ahoy cookies - you can also add in chunks of crispy peanut butter cookies or other cookies you love!
    • milk chocolate bars - Hershey bars or other chocolate candies work great! You can also use bittersweet chocolate chunks for a more complex flavor, like in my Matcha Brownies!
    • candy eyes - to give these cookies the cookie monster look -- or to give a little Halloween flair! And if you love M&Ms, you need to try my Chocolate Chip M&M Cookies!

    Equipment

You'll need a medium cookie scoop to scoop out even amounts -- it should be about 2.5 tablespoons to create larger cookies. You'll also want a kitchen scale to make sure that you measure your flour correctly, a large bowl for mixing the cookie dough, and a baking sheet and parchment paper to bake up this blue cookie monster cookies recipe! Finally, you'll want a cooling rack to cool your baked cookies! I love this three-tiered one from Wilton!

How to make Cookie Monster Cookies (Printable Instructions in Recipe Card Below)

See the recipe card below for detailed instructions and measurements, but here are the basic steps for this easy recipe -- it's very similar to the steps in my Dairy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe!

whisking butter and sugars for cookie monster cookies

    1. Whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar.

whisking wet ingredients for cookie monster cookies

    2. Add egg and vanilla extract and whisk until smooth.

sifting in dry ingredients for cookie monster cookies

    3. Sift in dry ingredients -- flour, baking soda, and salt and fold in until well combined.

    4. Add in blue food coloring, followed by cookie pieces and chocolate chips. Chill dough for one hour.

    5. Scoop out medium scoops of dough and fold around two small pieces of milk chocolate, forming into a ball around the chocolate.

    6. Bake until golden brown on the bottom and tops are just set. Add more cookies, chocolate chips, and candy googly eyes if you like just after they're done baking!

Hint: Be sure not to over-bake your cookies -- for a softer texture, remove them from the oven when the tops are just barely set, but the cookies are still very soft and look underdone. They'll continue to set as they cool.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • dairy free - if you prefer, you can use vegan or dairy free butter, as well as dairy free chocolate and chunks of dairy free chocolate chip cookies to make this a dairy free recipe, like my Dairy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe!
    • swap out cookies - feel free to swap out the mini Chips Ahoy and Oreo cookies for any other cookies you like! I love the idea of Thin Mints, Milanos, or Nilla wafers!
    • caramel - instead of Hershey's chocolate, try stuffing these blue cookie monster cookies with soft caramel candies! And for another caramel-stuff cookie, check out my salted caramel thumbprints!

    Storage

These cookie monsters cookies keep well at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.

    Top tip

Save some of your chocolate chips and cookie pieces to add to the tops of the cookies right after they come out of the oven!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I brown my butter for this easy cookie monster cookies recipe?

You sure can -- you may need to add a little more blue food coloring to offset the brown butter, but that would definitely add even more deliciousness to these cookie monsters cookies!

How long to these blue cookie monster cookies last at room temperature?

They'll stay fresh at room temperature for about three days in an airtight container, but I like to keep these refrigerated and then heat one in the microwave whenever I want one so I can have that gooey chocolate center!

How do I know when my cookie monster chocolate chip cookies recipe is done baking?

Your cookies monster cookies will be slightly golden brown on the sides, and no longer look wet in the middle, most likely no more than 12 minutes. They'll continue to cook as they cool. Double check your oven temp with an oven thermometer to make sure it's accurate. These cookies taste best when they're soft and gooey!

Why do they call them Monster Cookies?

This blue cookie monster cookies recipe is named after the cookie-hungry monster on Sesame Street! With their blue color and candy eye decoration, they look a little like him, and with all the cookie and chocolatey goodness inside, they're definitely his kind of treat! If you want more Cookie Monster goodness, try this Cookie Monster Smash Cake!
