This is the easiest recipe for your Halloween baking! You start with a baked 9x9 pan of brownies, so you can grab a box mix or even baked store-bought brownies! Ingredients

The great thing about these Halloween graveyard brownies is that you can adjust the amounts to your preference, so you'll only see a few measurements in the recipe card below. But here's what you'll need to make them!

    graveyard brownies ingredients
    • baked brownies - I recommend using a brownies recipe, whether they're my Chocolate Walnut Brownies, or a pan of one bowl cake like brownies you love! Or you can always grab a box of brownie mix in place of homemade brownies and prepare it according to package directions. A 9 x 13 pan or 9-inch pan works, depending on the size of the crowd and what is called for in your favorite brownie recipe!
    • crushed Oreo cookies - I used about ⅔ of a package of Halloween Oreos. You'll want to crush them using a rolling pin or with a food processor.
    • Milano cookies - these chocolate wafer cookies are the perfect shape to be the "tombstones" for these Halloween graveyard brownies! I love the pumpkin spice variety for fall, but any flavor of Milano cookies is perfect!
    • black writing icing - you can use black icing or an edible marker pen to create the writing on the cookie tombstones, or even melted chocolate and a fine piping tip.
    • gummi worms - I like to add gummi worms coming out the of the "dirt" for a fun creepy crawly detail! My favorite are the Albanese mini worms!
    • Halloween candy and sprinkles - I used candy corn pumpkins, some fun candy eyes, and these extra spooky bloody candy bones to decorate this fun Halloween treat!

    Equipment

You'll need a 9x9 baking pan and parchment paper to bake your brownies -- be sure to leave an overhang so that it's easy to remove your brownies from the pan. You'll also need either a food processor or a rolling pin to crush your Oreo cookies.

    Instructions

These Halloween Graveyard Brownies are one of the easiest Halloween recipes - just as fun as these Piranha Plant Cupcakes! Once you have your brownies baked and cooled to room temperature, it's an easy process to put them together, and the kids can help!

Pour crushed Oreo crumbs to create the "dirt" layer on top of the brownies.

Push decorated Milano cookies upright into the brownies to place tombstones.

Scatter candy pumpkins, bones, eyes, and gummy worms all around the cookies.

Enjoy your Graveyard Halloween Brownies! To cut down on mess, serve on a plate or in cups!

Hint: You can crush your Oreo cookies without a food processor by placing them into a resealable plastic bag. Seal bag, then pound with a rolling pin to crush the cookies into fine crumbs. They'll be the perfect texture to create the mounds of dirt that we need for these yummy treats!

    Variations

The best part about this fun treat is that you can customize your graveyard brownies however you like!

    • Swap in a different dessert bar - use my Brownie Blondies Recipe or Pumpkin Blondies as the base for these Halloween Graveyard Brownies!
    • Ice Cream Version - replace the baked brownies with a layer of chocolate ice cream!
    • Add a layer of chocolate frosting onto the brownies, under the Oreo crumbs, to add more sweetness and help the cookies stick to the brownies better. My Chocolate Fudge Frosting would be perfect!
    • And for another yummy brownie recipe, try my 2 Bite Brownies!
    pioneer woman halloween treats closeup

    Storage

You can store these graveyard brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the fridge for up to 5 days. Because of the toppings they're hard to freeze, but they won't last that long anyway!

    Top tip

Space out your cookies so that when you cut your brownies, you'll end up with one Milano "tombstone" in the center of each!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to use butter or oil for brownies?

All of my homemade brownie recipes use butter and would be great for these Halloween graveyard brownies! But if you're using a box mix, oil is great because it keeps them moist and fudgy.

Why is it called a brownie?

It's believed that brownies get their names from their brown color.

Can I skip the Oreo layer for these graveyard brownies?

Yes you can -- or you can replace it with chocolate or green-colored frosting!

I have to make 22 brownies for a class party on Halloween! I’m excited but do you think I can cut the Milano cookies in half at all for the grave?

Sure you can! I would use a serrated knife to make sure it's a clean cut, and you'd have to make the writing smaller - maybe use a cake decorating pen?
