Mini M&M Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Look no further! These are the BEST rice krispie treats with M&Ms. They have the perfect amount of gooey marshmallow, and they're made with mini M&Ms!

Everyone knows that mini M&Ms have the perfect chocolate-to-candy-shell ratio, so it only makes sense to use them for these perfect rice krispie treats! They give you the best chocolatey crunch in every bite!

Best Rice Krispie Treats with M&Ms - Ingredients

If you're a beginner, you're in luck! This is a very simple recipe for no bake treats with just a few ingredients. Check the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and their measurements.

    m&m rice krispie treats ingredients
    • mini marshmallows - a 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows is perfect for this recipe! And if you love marshmallows, try my Chocolate Chip and Marshmallow Cookies!
    • salted butter - I love the buttery flavor that salted butter adds.
    • pure vanilla extract - brings delicious vanilla flavor to make these the BEST rice krispie treats with M&Ms!
    • crispy rice cereal - the perfect crispy texture for these cereal treats!
    • mini M&M candies - these are the star of the show! Using mini M&Ms is my favorite, but you can also use regular-sized M&Ms as well. See below for some fun M&M rice krispie treats variations you can make! And if you prefer sprinkles, try my Birthday Rice Krispie Treats!

    Equipment

You won't need any special tools for this easy recipe! To heat your mixture, you'll need a large saucepan, or I just use a large microwave-safe bowl. I recommend an 8-inch square baking dish, or any similarly-sized dish you like! This 8-inch dish is great because it comes with a lid!

You'll also need a large bowl to mix everything in, and a rubber spatula or mixing spoon to whip it all up! I also like to use plastic wrap to help flatten the treats into the pan.

    Instructions

This is a super easy no bake dessert recipe! Here are the simple steps to make these delicious M&M rice krispie treats!

m&m rice krispie treats step 1

Melt butter in a large bowl or a large pot over medium heat. Add marshmallows and heat on the stove or in the microwave in 15-second increments until marshmallows are puffed up. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla until smooth.

m&m rice krispie treats step 2

Add crispy rice cereal and stir until coated with the marshmallow mixture.

m&m rice krispie treats step 3

    Stir in mini M&Ms.

m&m rice krispie treats step 4

Press mixture into an 8x8 pan greased with butter or cooking spray, and top with more M&Ms!

Hint: to get those gooey pieces of marshmallow in your finished rice krispie treats, save about a cup of the marshmallows at the beginning and add those extra marshmallows in once the rest of the marshmallow mixture is already melted!

    Chocolate M&M Rice Krispie Treats

Boost the chocolatey goodness in these homemade rice krispie treats by adding a little cocoa powder. Just ¼ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder mixed in with the melted marshmallow mixture will transform these treats into chocolatey bites of heaven!

Christmas Rice Krispie treats with M&Ms

Make these into a holiday treat by using red and green mini M&Ms instead of the regular colors! They would be a fun dessert on a Christmas Charcuterie Board along with my Kitchen Sink Cookies, or with a big glass of Oat Milk Eggnog!

    More Rice Krispie Treats Variations

If you love this mini m&m rice krispie treats recipe, you'll love my Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats! They're the perfect treat for peanut butter loves -- so gooey and bursting with peanut butter flavor!

Or try an elevated version of this chewy cereal bar recipe with my Brown Butter White Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats! With those, we'll start with butter in a saucepan and cook it until the butter melts and gives off a nutty smell. They're so decadent and the brown butter just takes them up three notches!

I also love making Rice Krispie Treats with Chocolate Chips! It's a similar recipe to this one, but it uses mini chocolate chips! And for another chocolatey treat, try my Pinecone Brownie Recipe!

    Storage

For the best rice krispie treats with M&Ms, I would recommend enjoying them the day you make them. But if you do store them for later, be sure to let your rice krispie treats cool completely so any excess liquid can evaporate before storing.  They should be good at room temperature for up to 3 days in an airtight container, or they can be frozen, well wrapped in plastic wrap or parchment paper, for up to 2 months.

    Top Tip

To get perfectly soft rice krispie treats, make sure that you're not heating your marshmallow mixture for too long! It should be puffed up but the marshmallows will still have their shape. Then, it'll continue to melt as you stir it until it's smooth.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is marshmallow fluff the same as melted marshmallows?

Not quite -- marshmallow fluff doesn't get as firm as melted marshmallows, so your rice krispie treats won't ever set up well enough to cut. I recommend using melted marshmallows for these gooey rice krispie treats!

How far in advance can you make Rice Krispie Treats?

Your rice krispie treats will last up to three days at room temperature, wrapped tightly with plastic wrap, but they're definitely best the same day they're made.

Should you refrigerate Rice Krispie treats?

Rice krispie treats are fine at room temperature, so there's no need to refrigerate them!

The touch of vanilla really elevated the flavor. I used Christmas sprinkles and regular size red and green M&Ms in the "batter" and then pressed more into it.These are a tasty and festive addition to your holiday dessert table.
