How do you make chocolate mousse from scratch?

Alas, I must inform you that this keto chocolate mousse is not made like traditional chocolate mousse: combining melted chocolate, egg yolks, whipped egg whites, and heavy whipping cream.

This eggless chocolate mousse uses cream cheese in a way similar to my Pumpkin Mousse Pie, to enrich the mixture and give it structure, as well as added flavor. I find that it's an easier, more accessible way to achieve a similar texture, and a bit of cheesecake flavor never hurts! Plus, it's the perfect dessert for anyone with egg allergies!

Enjoy it with some healthy whipped cream and it's the perfect date night dessert! And if you want another yummy keto treat, try this dairy free keto chocolate fudge!

    Keto Chocolate Mousse Ingredients

So let's take a look at the simple ingredients you'll need for this keto chocolate mousse:

    keto chocolate mousse ingredients
    • heavy cream - we'll divide our heavy cream, heating ¼ cup of it to melt with the chocolate, and whipping up the other ½ cup to fold in at the end. So you'll need to keep that remaining half cup nice and cold for the fluffiest whipped cream!
    • unsweetened chocolate - definitely look for a good quality unsweetened baking chocolate for that rich chocolate flavor. I like Ghirardelli and Baker's, but feel free to use whatever is your favorite! You could also use sugar free chocolate chips -- just adjust the amount of added sweetener to your preference. And for another chocolatey Valentine's treat, check out my Valentine's Day Cake Pops!
    • Swerve granulated sweetener - I prefer using Swerve because it has the most natural sugar-like flavor of any zero-calorie sweetener I've tried. But feel free to use stevia, monkfruit, or any other granular sweetener that satisfies your sweet craving!
    • vanilla - make sure you're using a good-quality pure vanilla extract. Or better yet, check out my post on how to make vanilla extract at home with just 2 ingredients!
    • pinch of salt - this helps to bring out the depth of flavor in the chocolate and vanilla in this keto chocolate mousse!
    • cream cheese - so important for this easy keto chocolate mousse recipe! It's got to be soft, so you can take it out of the fridge and set it at room temperature for an hour or so. Or you can remove it from the foil and microwave it for 8-10 seconds to soften it quickly!
    keto chocolate mousse with eggs

    Equipment

You'll need an electric mixer to whip up this recipe -- either a hand mixer or a stand mixer would be great! You'll also need some measuring cups and mixing bowls, and some cute dessert bowls to serve it in!

    Instructions

View the full recipe instructions and recipe video in the recipe card below, but here are the basic steps in this keto chocolate mousse recipe:

    keto chocolate mousse step 1

Heat heavy cream and stir with chopped chocolate and zero-carb sweetener in a large mixing bowl until melted and smooth.

    keto chocolate mousse step 2

Add softened cream cheese and whip until light and fluffy.

    keto chocolate mousse step 3

In a separate large bowl, beat cold heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

    keto chocolate mousse step 4

Fold chocolate mixture with whipped cream until well combined.

Hint: You can chill until ready to serve, but the best texture will be at room temperature!

Can I make this keto chocolate mousse with eggs?

As I mentioned, the traditional way of making chocolate mousse uses separated raw eggs beaten separately to achieve a light and airy texture. To keep this recipe for keto chocolate mousse super easy, we'll skip the eggs.

And it's also great for anyone with egg allergies or who prefers to avoid raw egg! For another keto treat without eggs, try this sugar free pudding!

    Tips and F.A.Q.

How many carbs are in chocolate mousse?

Regular chocolate mousse can have up to 32 net carbs per serving, but because this keto chocolate mousse is made with unsweetened chocolate and Swerve, it's only got 6 net carbs for each generous serving!

    What chocolate is Keto-friendly?

In this keto chocolate mousse, we're using unsweetened chocolate, which has 1 gram of carbs and zero grams of sugar per serving. Because it has no sweetener added, it's much more keto-friendly than other types of chocolate. We also opted for unsweetened chocolate to allow you to customize the amount of sweetener in this keto chocolate mousse recipe to your liking. Since the chocolate is such a major flavor in this low carb chocolate mousse recipe, it's important to get a high-quality unsweetened chocolate for baking. I used Baker's Unsweetened Baking Chocolate.

    keto chocolate mousse avocado

What are all those grams of sugar down in the nutrition facts?

The sweetener we're using is Swerve, a calorie-free natural sweetener. It has no impact on blood sugar, and is completely keto-friendly! If you can't get your hands on Swerve, feel free to use stevia, monkfruit, or any other keto-friendly sweetener that you love in this sweet treat!

How should I serve my keto chocolate mousse?

You have lots of options! My suggestion would be with a low-carb whipped cream (recipe included below) and some shaved unsweetened chocolate and raspberries! Then just pipe or spoon your simple keto chocolate mousse into some small dessert dishes or ramekins. I served mine in a pair of coupe glasses for an extra touch of elegance!

Can you eat whip cream on the Keto diet?

Yes! Just use a sugar-free powdered sweetener like Confectioner's Swerve instead of adding sugar!

    Top Tip

Make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature before mixing it in, but your heavy cream should be chilled before adding.

The fact that this recipe is keto was not a must for me, the flavor alone makes it worth making over and over again. So rich and creamy!
