    Easy Shaken Espresso Recipe Ingredients

What goes in a shaken espresso? Before we get to the nitty-gritty, let's gather all the essentials. Here are the simple ingredients that you'll need for your DIY Starbucks Iced Shaken Espresso recipe:

    easy shaken espresso recipe ingredients
    • Espresso Shots: Start with freshly brewed espresso. If you have an espresso maker, great! If not, a French press or AeroPress can work wonders too. Use high-quality, freshly ground coffee beans for the best flavor. You'll need three shots of espresso to match the Starbucks version, but you could also substitute cold brew coffee in a pinch!
    • Ice: Lots of it – because it's an "iced" espresso.
    • Vanilla Simple Syrup: Easily made by combining equal parts sugar and hot water. You'll want to make this ahead of time so that it's cooled to room temperature -- see below for the easy instructions, or use my Starbucks Brown Sugar Syrup to make this a brown sugar shaken espresso recipe! You can even spike your coffee with a splash of blackberry raspberry liqueur!
    • Milk: Whole milk, 2%, or your preferred non-dairy milk -- see below for my tips for a Starbucks oatmilk shaken espresso recipe copycat!

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Equipment

You'll need an espresso machine (or, as in my case, a Nespresso machine) to brew your fresh espresso. You'll also want a saucepan to make your simple syrup. Finally, grab a cocktail shaker or a mason jar with a lid to shake up your drink and a tall glass to pour it into!

    Instructions

This shaken espresso recipe is SO easy! Check the recipe card below for full detailed instructions, but here are the basic steps:

    shaken espresso recipe step 1

Combine hot espresso, syrup, and ice in a cocktail shaker or mason jar.

    shaken espresso recipe step 2

    Shake 15-20 seconds vigorously.

    shaken espresso recipe step 3

Strain into a glass with ice and add milk of your choice.

    shaken espresso recipe step 4

Sprinkle cinnamon on top and enjoy!

Hint: For even more decadence, you can use a milk frother to froth your milk up!

    Substitutions

It's so easy customize this amazing coffee drink for your needs!

    • Dairy-Free - use oat milk, almond milk, or whatever nondairy milk you like instead of dairy milk!
    • No Refined Sugar - substitute the vanilla simple syrup for agave syrup or maple syrup!
    • Sugar Free - substitute your favorite sugar-free vanilla syrup to save sugar or calories!

Customize It: Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso Recipe

The Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso is my favorite drink recipe at Starbucks! It's SO good, and so easy to customize!

    • Brown Sugar - use my Starbucks Brown Sugar Syrup recipe to make this drink with even more flavor! It's got the caramel-y notes of light or dark brown sugar, vanilla, and a touch of cinnamon! And if you love cinnamon, check out my Cake Mix Apple Cobbler! You can also use any other syrup you like, like this tarragon syrup!
    • Oat Milk - swap in your favorite creamy oat milk instead of dairy milk to better replicate the flavor of the Starbucks version.
    • Cinnamon - top your drink with a dash of cinnamon for that perfect Starbucks flavor! And if you love cinnamon and spice, you'll definitely want to check out my Chai Spice Bundt Cake or my Cinnamon Roll Apple Pies!

Top with my Sweet Cream Cold Foam Recipe for a decadent twist!

Bonus Tips for the Perfect Starbucks Experience

    1. Use a clear glass to admire the layers and aesthetics of your creation.
    2. Experiment with different milk options and syrup strengths to find your ideal balance.
    3. Crushed ice instead of ice cubes can be a game-changer if you prefer a slushier texture.
    4. Double or triple the recipe for friends and family – this homemade Starbucks Iced Shaken Espresso is bound to impress.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many pumps are in a shaken espresso?

At Starbucks, they use about four pumps of syrup, which amounts to about four tablespoons. But the great thing about this this shaken espresso recipe is that you can adjust the amount of syrup to fit your tastes!

How many shots of espresso are in a brown sugar shaken espresso?

The standard amount is three shots of blonde espresso for a grande Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, but again you can adjust this recipe for your preference with a single or double shot of espresso.

    iced shaken espresso starbucks customize

Can you make a brown sugar shaken espresso without espresso?

You sure can! You can substitute a cup of strong coffee or cold brew if you like, or you can use instant espresso coffee to make quick espresso style shots! If you'd rather try a recipe with rum, check out my rum espresso martini recipe!

    Top Tip

Make sure you shake your coffee well with ice. The slight dilution helps to soften the espresso flavor and make the drink even more refreshing.

Is the 4 tablespoons of this syrup equal to the two pumps at Starbucks? Or is this a bit sweeter than that?

I believe that Starbucks uses pumps that are 1/2 tablespoon each, so two pumps would be 1 tablespoon of this syrup. 🙂
