Is pumpkin sauce the same as pumpkin syrup at Starbucks?

The Starbucks pumpkin sauce is a little richer and more decadent than many pumpkin spice syrups. But it is essentially a pumpkin-flavored syrup that can be used interchangeably with pumpkin syrup.

Does Starbucks pumpkin spice sauce have milk?

Yes, the Starbucks pumpkin sauce recipe contains condensed milk as an ingredient. According to the Starbucks pumpkin sauce nutrition listed on the Starbucks website, the ingredients are:

    1. sugar
    2. condensed milk
    3. pumpkin purée
    4. natural colors, flavors, and preservatives

But as you'll see in the ingredients list for this homemade pumpkin spice sauce, you can substitute the condensed milk to make a vegan version! And if you're more in the mood for a smoothie, check out my list of Smoothie Recipes Without Yogurt!

Can I buy Starbucks Pumpkin Sauce?

Unfortunately, Starbucks does not sell their pumpkin spice syrup separately. I've read that the Fontana pumpkin spice sauce is a good substitute, but its availability online is spotty at best. Your best bet is to make your own with this easy copycat Starbucks pumpkin syrup recipe! Read on to learn how!

    Starbucks Pumpkin Sauce Ingredients

This is such an easy recipe, just like my Starbucks Brown Sugar Syrup! With just a few simple ingredients you could be on your way to pumpkin goodness! Here's what you'll need:

    • real pumpkin puree - look for 100% canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. You could also use your own homemade pumpkin puree! And if you're a major pumpkin lover, you'll also want to check out my Pumpkin Pie in Graham Cracker Crust!
    • sweetened condensed milk - or you can use sweetened condensed coconut milk or condensed oat milk to make a dairy-free pumpkin spice sauce!
    • pumpkin pie spice - grab some store-bought pumpkin pie spice or make your own DIY pumpkin pie spice blend! And if you love the spices in this recipe, you'll definitely want to check out my Chai Spice Bundt Cake and my Cake Mix Apple Cobbler!
    • granulated sugar - you can adjust to your own sweetness preference!
    • water - to help it all combine into a pourable sauce!
    • vanilla - for the best flavor, I like to use pure vanilla extract. Or you can make your own!
    • salt - to bring out that pumpkin spice flavor.

See recipe card below for full recipe details and ingredient amounts.

    Equipment

The main tools you'll need to make this pumpkin sauce are a saucepan and a whisk to mix it all up! You'll also want some measuring cups and spoons for your measurements, and a heatproof jar or container to store your delicious homemade pumpkin syrup.

You could also grab some of these cute glass coffee syrup pump dispensers with labels to create the full coffee shop experience!

How to Make Starbucks Pumpkin Sauce

This pumpkin spice sauce is so simple to make! You'll be making your own at-home pumpkin spice lattes or pumpkin cream cold brew in no time!

    starbucks pumpkin sauce step 1

Heat water and sugar in a saucepan until sugar is dissolved into a simple syrup.

    starbucks pumpkin sauce step 2

Whisk in sweetened condensed milk and pumpkin until smooth.

    starbucks pumpkin sauce step 3

Whisk in pumpkin pie spice and salt until well combined, then remove from heat and add vanilla.

    starbucks pumpkin sauce step 4

Let cool to room temperature, then pour into a mason jar or coffee syrup pump dispenser.

Hint: if your sauce is a little lumpy, you can pour it through a fine mesh strainer or blend it up with an immersion blender for a few seconds.

    Vegan Pumpkin Spice Sauce

As I mentioned above, you can make your homemade lattes vegan by substituting condensed oat milk or condensed coconut milk instead of dairy milk in this pumpkin spice latte syrup recipe!

You can also use a can of regular coconut milk and add ½ cup of granulated sugar. Cook it down over medium heat, stirring, until reduced by half, and you can use it in this homemade pumpkin spice syrup recipe just like condensed milk!

And for more vegan pumpkin goodness, check out my Brown Butter Pumpkin Donuts, my Vegan Pumpkin Smoothie or my Pumpkin Nice Cream!

    Storage

I love storing this pumpkin sauce recipe in a coffee syrup pump dispenser, but you can also use a heatproof jar or airtight container to store your delicious homemade pumpkin syrup in the fridge for up to 10 days.

    Top Tip

One of the best things about this copycat Starbucks Pumpkin Sauce is how easy it is to customize to your tastes! Add a bit more or less sugar or pumpkin pie spice so that it tastes just how you like it!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does Starbucks use pumpkin sauce or syrup?

Starbucks uses their own mixture of pumpkin purée, condensed milk, and natural flavors.

Does Starbucks pumpkin spice sauce have sugar?

Yes it does -- both regular sugar and condensed milk, which is sweetened.

How many calories in pumpkin sauce at Starbucks?

If you're wondering how many calories are in one pump of pumpkin sauce at Starbucks, the Starbucks pumpkin sauce nutrition information is available on the Starbucks website here! But for this homemade pumpkin spice sauce, you'll get about 67 calories per teaspoon.

What are some ways I can use this pumpkin spice sauce?

In addition to recreating your favorite Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, this decadent syrup would be a great topping for ice cream, pumpkin pancakes, or French toast. It could also be a mix-in for milkshakes, or to add a little pumpkin flavor to any of your favorite treats this time of year! I use it to make my Pumpkin Cream Cold Foam and my Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini!

Yes! In an airtight container it should stay fresh for a couple months in the freezer.

While I waited for this too cool I tasted it. It tastes like liquid pumpkin pie (I know seems obvious), just a bit sweeter. But once you add to coffee it is PERFECTION. Bravo Chenée!
