Equipment
You won't need any special tools for this easy recipe! To heat your mixture, you'll need a large saucepan, or I just use a large microwave-safe bowl. I recommend an 8-inch square baking dish, or any similarly-sized dish you like! This 8-inch dish is great because it comes with a lid!
You'll also need a large bowl to mix everything in, and a rubber spatula or mixing spoon to whip it all up! I also like to use plastic wrap to help flatten the treats into the pan.
Instructions
This is a super easy no bake dessert recipe! Here are the simple steps to make these delicious M&M rice krispie treats!
Melt butter in a large bowl or a large pot over medium heat. Add marshmallows and heat on the stove or in the microwave in 15-second increments until marshmallows are puffed up. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla until smooth.
Add crispy rice cereal and stir until coated with the marshmallow mixture.
Stir in mini M&Ms.
Press mixture into an 8x8 pan greased with butter or cooking spray, and top with more M&Ms!
Hint: to get those gooey pieces of marshmallow in your finished rice krispie treats, save about a cup of the marshmallows at the beginning and add those extra marshmallows in once the rest of the marshmallow mixture is already melted!
Chocolate M&M Rice Krispie Treats
Boost the chocolatey goodness in these homemade rice krispie treats by adding a little cocoa powder. Just ¼ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder mixed in with the melted marshmallow mixture will transform these treats into chocolatey bites of heaven!
Christmas Rice Krispie treats with M&Ms
Make these into a holiday treat by using red and green mini M&Ms instead of the regular colors! They would be a fun dessert on a Christmas Charcuterie Board or with a big glass of Oat Milk Eggnog!

Storage
For the best rice krispie treats with M&Ms, I would recommend enjoying them the day you make them. But if you do store them for later, be sure to let your rice krispie treats cool completely so any excess liquid can evaporate before storing. They should be good at room temperature for up to 3 days in an airtight container, or they can be frozen, well wrapped in plastic wrap or parchment paper, for up to 2 months.

Top Tip
To get perfectly soft rice krispie treats, make sure that you're not heating your marshmallow mixture for too long! It should be puffed up but the marshmallows will still have their shape. Then, it'll continue to melt as you stir it until it's smooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not quite -- marshmallow fluff doesn't get as firm as melted marshmallows, so your rice krispie treats won't ever set up well enough to cut. I recommend using melted marshmallows for these gooey rice krispie treats!
Your rice krispie treats will last up to three days at room temperature, wrapped tightly with plastic wrap, but they're definitely best the same day they're made.
Rice krispie treats are fine at room temperature, so there's no need to refrigerate them!

The touch of vanilla really elevated the flavor. I used Christmas sprinkles and regular size red and green M&Ms in the "batter" and then pressed more into it.These are a tasty and festive addition to your holiday dessert table.
