What is cinnamon roll pie made of?
Here's all you'll need for this Pillsbury cinnamon roll apple pie recipe:
- canned cinnamon rolls - a can of cinnamon rolls will serve as our pie crust! I usually use Pillsbury classic cinnamon rolls (the 8-count can), but you can also use a different brand or grocery store brand if you like. Just make sure your cinnamon buns come with icing and that they're not the big "Grands" kind.
- apple pie filling - any canned apple pie filling you like is great -- you can even use the homemade apple pie filling from my Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls if you'd like to make your own!
And that's it for this cinnamon roll pie recipe - they're a huge hit for fall desserts and SO easy! Check below for some variations you can use to make this 2-ingredient apple pie cups recipe your own!
Equipment
The main tool you'll need for this muffin tin cinnamon roll apple pies recipe is... you guessed it! A muffin tin! Any 12-cup standard size muffin pan will work with four muffin cups left empty, but if you only have a 6-cup muffin pan then you'll have two extra cinnamon rolls left over. You can save them for later or bake them separately in ramekins.
You may also want to have a wire rack to help the mini cinnamon roll apple pies cool more quickly and allow for your glaze to drip off the sides cleanly.
Instructions
The recipe card below will give you detailed step-by-step instructions for making this cake, as well as ingredient substitutions and a recipe video! But here's a quick look at how you'll make this cinnamon roll apple pie recipe!
Spoon pie filling into a large bowl or a plate and use a knife to cut the apple pieces into smaller chunks.
Flatten cinnamon rolls into disks and press them into the bottom of the pan like the bottom crust of a pie. You can use a rolling pin, but I just use my hands.
Spoon apple pie filling into cinnamon roll crust, and bake!
Once your cinnamon roll apple pie bites are cooled, heat the cinnamon roll icing for a few seconds and drizzle it on top.
Hint: Don't overfill the cinnamon roll cups! The cinnamon roll dough will puff up a little while baking, and you don't want your mini apple pies to overflow.
Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie Cups with Streusel Topping
If you want to take this two ingredient cinnamon roll apple pies recipe up a notch, this is my favorite way! Top your cinnamon roll apple pie cups with streusel topping and turn them into mini Dutch apple pies! You can use the crumb topping from my Apple Pie With Graham Cracker Crust recipe! Just add a few minutes to the bake time -- your pies are done with the crumb topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
Variations
- Pie Filling Flavor: You can swap the apple pie filling for any flavor you like! This recipe would be great with peach pie filling!
- Save your extra apple pie filling to make these again or mix it into oatmeal, or use it to top ice cream!
- Topping: Swap the icing for caramel sauce to make caramel apple pies, or cinnamon sugar!
Storage
You can store these Pillsbury cinnamon roll apple pie cups in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or in the fridge for up to 4 days.
You can also freeze them, well wrapped in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, for up to two months.
